There has been a club catering for rabbits and cavies in Dunfermline, certainly since the days of the Second World War. During this period Fife was a hotbed of Clubs for rabbits and cavies, apart from Dunfermline, there were clubs in Cowdenbeath, Kirkcaldy, Leslie, and the East of Fife. Whilst some of these clubs don’t exist today they have been incorporated within the DDRCC or still exist primarily as a poultry society.
The Club that we have today is a development of an amalgamation of the Kirkcaldy Domestic Rabbit Club and the Dunfermline Rabbit Club taking place in March 1967. There were two, two star shows (those not familiar with this term, this means the shows were held in pens, had guaranteed prize money and under the rules of the British Rabbit Council). The first show of this new Club was held in Dunfermline and was a show for young stock with a handicrafts section.
By the start of 1970 the Club had moved from having alternate shows in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy to having them all in the Dunfermline area. The Club continued with the name KDRC until 1979 when with the need to renovated and purchase new pens the then new name Dunfermline and District Rabbit and Cavy Club was created. This was to help with grant applications made to the then Dunfermline District Council to help offset some of the costs of new pens.
As the cavy entries dwindled further it was agreed to change the name of the Club to Dunfermline and District Rabbit Club in 1985. The Club at this time was doing well and entries were stable in the rabbit section.
By 2010 the interest in cavies was being revitalised by an enthusiastic group and it was agreed that at our April show a cavy section would be incorporated once again into the shows. The cavy section has been a complete success and the name of the Club returned to being Dunfermline and District Rabbit and Cavy Club in 2011
